People who develop tooth decay will certainly need to get it fixed. Dental fillings can be used to treat the condition. Any tooth decay will be removed and replaced with a filling. Fillings can also be used to correct teeth that are unusually worn, cracked, or broken.
In order to put the filling in, the dentist will first have the apply anesthetic on the area. The decayed portion of the tooth will then be removed using either a laser, air abrasion device, or a drill. The particular piece of equipment used will depend on certain factors such as the location of the decay as well as the extent of it.
There will also be bacteria and debris inside the tooth after the decay has been removed. It will need to be cleaned out before the filling can be put in. Also, if the root of your tooth is exposed, a liner will usually be put down before the filling in order to protect it.
Fillings are commonly applied to your tooth in layers. Depending on the particular type used, a special light may be needed to cure each layer before applying the next one. After all of the layers have been applied, the dentist will get rid of excess material and polish the tooth to make it look beautiful.
One of the problems that you may experience after receiving dental fillings is sensitive teeth. You may experience this when you go out in cold air, eat cold items or sweet foods, or even experience a change in air pressure.
Most people don’t experience this sensitivity for long however. It should go away within two weeks of getting the filling. If it doesn’t go away by this time, then you may need to contact your dentist and make an appointment
You should know that there are many different materials that can be used for dental fillings. Some of the most common include gold, silver, and composite materials. Each one offers advantages and disadvantages which you should discuss with your dentist.
Gold and silver are both durable materials. With proper care, they can last at least 15 years. These two materials are also quite strong, so you don’t have to be careful with the type of foods that you eat. The advantage or disadvantage of gold is the way it looks. Some people prefer the look while others hate it.
Gold dental fillings also require at least two visits to the dentist’s office unlike with other materials. Gold is also the most expensive material. Silver is less expensive than both gold and composite fillings though.
The main disadvantage of silver fillings is that they can make the surrounding tooth structure turn a grayish color. They also won’t match the natural color of your teeth. This type of material may also increase the risk of your teeth cracking or fracturing because of temperature changes.
There are also composite fillings. They can match the color of your natural teeth much better. They are also stronger since they’re capable of bonding chemically with the tooth structure.
However, they don’t last nearly as long as the metal types. Some of the final problems with these dental fillings is that they can chip off and also cost much more than silver fillings.
