They aren’t usually performed by a dentist though. Instead, they’re usually performed by an oral hygienist. You should have your teeth cleaned at least twice a year, but sometimes more. The frequency will depend on whether you’re a smoker and your particular eating habits.

You shouldn’t make the mistake of thinking that brushing and flossing your teeth regularly will get the job done. There are areas that you can’t get to easily and tartar can start to build up. Regular cleanings will help prevent this from happening.

If you haven’t gone to a dentist in a long time, then you may need a deep cleaning instead of a regular one. Tartar may have built up below your gumline. The deep cleaning will remove tartar that not only resides on the surface, but all the way down to the root.

Dental cleanings typically don’t require any anesthetic. However, people who have very sensitive teeth may find the procedure uncomfortable. If you request it, you may be given nitrous oxide to help calm your nerves.

The procedure shouldn’t take very long. The typical time is around 15 to 30 minutes. However, if there is a lot of tartar present because of irregular visits, it can take longer. You may also experience more pain due to the fact that it will take more pressure to scrape the tartar buildup off.

Dental cleanings require the use of various tools. One of the main tool is the scaler. It looks like a metal hook, and is used to scrape tartar buildup off your teeth. Some patients find the use of this tool a bit uncomfortable.

Another tool that is commonly used is the tooth polisher. As its name suggests, it’s used to polish and buff teeth. It’s typically used first since it helps get rid of smaller pieces of plaque. Polishers come in various sizes so they can get into all areas of the mouth.

The piece of equipment that you’ll probably be glad to see is the rinsing device. It shoots water into your mouth so you can rinse out the tartar that was removed from your teeth. Instead of using plain water, mouthwash can also be used.

Dental cleanings normally don’t pose any type of risk to patients. However, those that have heart conditions need to let their dentist know about it beforehand. It may be necessary to take antibiotics before the cleaning in order to prevent a condition known as bacterial endocarditis.

Make sure that you don’t put off going to the dentist for regular dental cleanings. Doing so can protect your life. There have been studies that suggest a link between poor oral hygiene and heart problems. Oral cancer, which can be fatal, can also be caught and treated early.

This is particularly true for older teens and younger adults. Since braces are installed permanently in your mouth, they can be very irritating and make cleaning your teeth properly difficult. One good solution nowadays is Invisalign.

Invisalign works much like braces do. The appliance consists of clear plastic trays that fit into your mouth. They have to be custom-fitted and can fix a range of dental problems such as gaps, crooked teeth, and misaligned teeth.

The main reason why people turn to Invisalign is because the appliance is transparent. Unlike having a set of metallic braces in your mouth, other people will have a much harder time seeing this type of device. This is why this option is so popular with adults and teens.

Another benefit of Invisalign is that it is removable unlike permanent braces. This is especially useful when it comes to eating. You can simply remove the trays before eating so that food particles don’t get stuck in them.

People who wear braces can’t eat certain foods because they’ll get stuck in their mouths. If you get Invisalign aligners, then you won’t face these restrictions. Since they’re removable, you’ll also have an easier time taking care of your teeth properly.

One of the main problems that people who wear braces experience is discomfort. Not only can they irritate your tongue, they can also cause problems on the insides of your cheeks. The invisible aligners don’t cause any irritation in your mouth.

You should know that Invisalign invisible braces cost more than their traditional counterparts. As with the cost of braces, the exact cost of your treatment will depend on the severity of your orthodontic condition. On average, you can expect to pay around $5,000.

It’s also important to note that Invisalign aligners don’t offer a quicker solution than typical braces. It can take just as much time to align your teeth properly. Also, not everyone will be suited to wear them. If your condition is severe enough, surgery may be required instead.

When wearing Invisalign aligners, it’s best that you take them out before eating. Food particles can get stuck in the aligners and cause them to become discolored. You’ll also need to take proper care of your teeth.

If you don’t, you can develop problems such as swollen gums, bad breath, and cavities. Investing in an angular toothbrush may be a good idea.

They make for a very strong foundation since the implant is fused into the jawbone. With such a strong foundation, your replacement teeth will function exactly the same as your real ones.

This type of procedure isn’t for everyone. You will need to have healthy gums and bone strong enough to support the implant. After having the procedure done, you would also need to visit the dentist on a regular basis as well as practice good oral hygiene.

People with certain conditions aren’t suitable for these implants either. Chronic disorders such as heart disease and diabetes can pose an increased risk. Those who have undergone radiation therapy also may not be suitable to receive them.

Dental implants are made of titanium and inserted into the bone. Then, the area is given a chance to heal and give the tissues time to grow around the metal and provide a secure bond. This can take up to three months.

After the implant has healed thoroughly, an abutment is attached to the implant. This is designed to secure the tooth to the implant. In order to make the artificial tooth, or crown, an impression will have to be taken of your teeth and sent off to a dental laboratory.

It’s not absolutely necessary for crowns to be placed on the implants. Doing so sometimes requires multiple crowns be placed. Instead, a removable denture can also be fixed to the dental implant.

You’ll find that there are plenty of other options to replace missing teeth. However, dental implants offer a few advantages over these other options. In order to get a tooth-supported bridge, your dentist would have to strip away tooth enamel. This can lead to problems with your oral health over time. This step isn’t required to install implants.

Dentures are also another common option. However, people with dentures can experience many problems. If they don’t fit exactly right, you may have trouble pronouncing your words clearly. They may also fall out at an inopportune time.

If you have dentures, you may also have a hard time chewing. You also wouldn’t be able to eat certain foods. You can eat anything that you want if you get dental implants since they offer much more strength.

These implants also offer more convenience. You don’t have to worry about removing your teeth every night and placing them in a solution. You will also be able to clean easier between your teeth, which would definitely improve your oral hygiene.

If you’re thinking about getting dental implants, talk to your dentist to see if they’re a suitable option for you.

When they do, they will need to get the condition treated or it will lead to many more problems. Root planing is a useful procedure to stop the progression of gum disease.

Root planing and scaling are two procedures that are often combined. Scaling refers to the process of removing tartar on the surfaces of your teeth. Planing goes a bit deeper and removes tartar that has formed beneath the gumline all the way down to the root surfaces.

It may sound like a terrifying procedure, but it’s really not. There’s no need to be afraid of getting this procedure done as you would with a root canal since you likely won’t experience much discomfort with root planing.

The dentist will likely use anesthetic to numb your tooth roots and gums. A standard scraping tool will then be used to remove tartar on the surfaces of your teeth as well as below the gumline. Sometimes, the dentist may use an ultrasonic tool instead, which is even more comfortable for the patient.

Sometimes, root planing can lead to additional problems. It provides a way for bacteria to get into your bloodstream. The tissues surround your teeth may also become infected. It is especially risky for people with a high risk of severe infections to undergo this procedure.

After the root planing procedure is done, the dentist will usually put antibiotic fibers into the spaces between your teeth and gums. These fibers will help prevent an infection from setting in. They will also prompt your teeth and gums to heal faster. They will need to be removed approximately a week after the procedure.

You will also need to practice good oral hygiene after a root planing procedure Poor hygiene may have lead to its necessity in the first place. At the very least, you will need to brush your teeth twice daily. It’s also a good idea to floss too. If you don’t take care of your teeth properly, the gum disease will likely keep progressing.

Use of tobacco products should also be limited after a root planing procedure, if not cut out entirely. Smoking cigarettes or chewing tobacco will not only delay the healing process, but can also increase the risk of the area becoming infected. It is best to quit using these products entirely or at least until your mouth heals properly.

Most people don’t want to walk with discolored, crooked, or chipped teeth. In these cases, there are two easy ways to fix the problem. You’ll have the choice of getting lumineers or traditional veneers.

Veneers consist of a thin porcelain shell. This shell can easily be shaped to match your teeth perfectly. Lumineers are a type of ultra-thin veneer. They act in much the same way and offer some of the same advantages. However, there are a few differences.

Both veneers and lumineers are designed for durability. The offer just about as much strength as your natural teeth. They will last for years as long as you care for them properly.

The main difference between the two is the procedure required to put them in. In order to put a veneer in your mouth, your dentist will have to remove a lot of tooth enamel. If he doesn’t, then the veneer may not bond well enough to your teeth. This removal of enamel always has the possibility of exposing your nerve.

Lumineers are much easier to put in. They do require a little removal of tooth enamel in many cases, however, there are some cases that don’t any removal at all. Best of all, you won’t have to get any shots in order to get them put in.

One possible advantage that veneers offer over lumineers is their thinness. Since they tend to be less bulky, they offer a more natural look. However, lumineers can sometimes be made more thin than veneers, but they may break if they’re not thick enough.

Another possible disadvantage for lumineers is their translucency. If you have naturally dark teeth, then they may show their the lumineers. Something would have to be done about that in order to keep this darker color from showing through.

The main disadvantage when it comes to veneers is that the procedure is irreversible. Once the tooth enamel has been removed, there is no putting it back. Since there is little to no tooth enamel removed for lumineers, you can get them taken off if you wanted to.

However, you should know that they adhere to your natural teeth very tightly. So, it’s not exactly an easy process to remove them. It will also probably cost you a lot of money to have it done.

Speaking of cost, you will probably want to know the price comparison between veneers and lumineers. Veneers tend to cost more. However, the particular price that you’ll pay for lumineers will vary depending on the location you live in.

Dentures are commonly used to fix a variety of dental problems. However, crowns and bridges may also be useful. Unlike dentures, they’re permanently cemented onto implants or existing teeth. You won’t be able to remove them unless you go back to the dentist either.

Crowns can be used for many reasons. Teeth that are weak or already fractured can be covered with a crown. They can also be used after a root canal treatment, dental implant, or to cover up discolored teeth.

Crowns also also be made from a wide variety of materials. They are usually made from ceramic or porcelain. However, metal alloys or gold can also be used. Metal offers more strength, but ceramic and porcelain can be colored to match your natural teeth. Sometimes, metal is surrounded by porcelain to give the best of both worlds.

If crowns aren’t suitable for your situation, then a bridge may be necessary. It’s used to replace one or more teeth that are missing. Like crowns, they are cemented to remaining natural teeth or implants that have been put in.

There are three types of dental bridges that you can get. The most common type are the traditional variety in which a crown or implant will have to be put in beside the missing tooth. If there aren’t natural teeth on both sides of the missing tooth, then a cantilever bridge can be used. A resin-bonded bridge use a metal framework consisting of plastic teeth and gums that is attached to your natural teeth.

As with crowns, bridges can be made of various materials too. The type of material you need will depend on the location of the missing tooth or teeth as well as aesthetic reasons. Ceramic and porcelain offer a better match for your existing teeth, but metal offers more strength.

In order to get a crown or bridge, your dentist will need to reduce the size of your teeth. This is to ensure that the crown or bridge can fit properly over them. After this, a dental impression will be made and sent to a dental laboratory.

While your crown or bridge is being made in the lab, you will be fitted with a temporary crown or bridge. Whenever your permanent one is ready, the temporary one will be removed and replaced with the permanent design.

You may experience problems with your bridge if you don’t practice good oral hygiene. The bridge requires support from the teeth or bone designed to keep it stable. If they are damaged by disease or some other reason, the bridge may come loose.

In order to put the filling in, the dentist will first have the apply anesthetic on the area. The decayed portion of the tooth will then be removed using either a laser, air abrasion device, or a drill. The particular piece of equipment used will depend on certain factors such as the location of the decay as well as the extent of it.

There will also be bacteria and debris inside the tooth after the decay has been removed. It will need to be cleaned out before the filling can be put in. Also, if the root of your tooth is exposed, a liner will usually be put down before the filling in order to protect it.

Fillings are commonly applied to your tooth in layers. Depending on the particular type used, a special light may be needed to cure each layer before applying the next one. After all of the layers have been applied, the dentist will get rid of excess material and polish the tooth to make it look beautiful.

One of the problems that you may experience after receiving dental fillings is sensitive teeth. You may experience this when you go out in cold air, eat cold items or sweet foods, or even experience a change in air pressure.

Most people don’t experience this sensitivity for long however. It should go away within two weeks of getting the filling. If it doesn’t go away by this time, then you may need to contact your dentist and make an appointment

You should know that there are many different materials that can be used for dental fillings. Some of the most common include gold, silver, and composite materials. Each one offers advantages and disadvantages which you should discuss with your dentist.

Gold and silver are both durable materials. With proper care, they can last at least 15 years. These two materials are also quite strong, so you don’t have to be careful with the type of foods that you eat. The advantage or disadvantage of gold is the way it looks. Some people prefer the look while others hate it.

Gold dental fillings also require at least two visits to the dentist’s office unlike with other materials. Gold is also the most expensive material. Silver is less expensive than both gold and composite fillings though.

The main disadvantage of silver fillings is that they can make the surrounding tooth structure turn a grayish color. They also won’t match the natural color of your teeth. This type of material may also increase the risk of your teeth cracking or fracturing because of temperature changes.

There are also composite fillings. They can match the color of your natural teeth much better. They are also stronger since they’re capable of bonding chemically with the tooth structure.

However, they don’t last nearly as long as the metal types. Some of the final problems with these dental fillings is that they can chip off and also cost much more than silver fillings.

When it happens, you will want to replace them for functional as well as aesthetic purposes. One of your options to replace missing teeth is a set of dentures.

There are two main types of dentures that you can get depending on how many teeth that you have missing. There are partial and full dentures. Your dentist will discuss which is the best type for you based on both your dental and financial situation.

Partial dentures are useful if you only have a few missing teeth. They will help keep your natural teeth from changing positions. However, if you have many missing teeth, then a full set will likely be the better solution.

Dentures are typically made of metal and acrylic resin. They have to be custom-shaped to fit your mouth. They can be kept in place with suction or some type of adhesive material.

Partial dentures are sometimes used instead of bridges since they can be removed. They use a metal frame that attach to your real teeth. Some of your natural teeth may have crowns placed over them. These crowns will provide additional support to keep the denture in place.

When it comes to full dentures, you can either get the conventional or immediate variety. A dentist will need to measure and get impressions of your jaw in order to install either type. Your teeth may also need to be removed before they can be placed.

Once your teeth have been removed, you probably won’t want to go around looking like that. Immediate dentures, as their name suggests, can be placed in your mouth immediately. You can get conventional dentures to replace them after they have been constructed properly.

If you choose to wear dentures, then you may experience a few problems. Wearing them will almost certainly be uncomfortable for the first couple of weeks or months. You will need to practice eating and speaking with them in your mouth.

It is also common for people to experience soreness or irritation. If the irritation persists, you will probably need to go back to your dentist to see what the problem is. With a set of dentures, you will have to go to the dentist for annual visits anyway.

You should be aware that your mouth will naturally change over time. This means that your dentures will need to be adjusted to make up for these changes. It’s also common for denture wearers to have to have a new base made to accommodate the existing teeth.

When wearing dentures, proper oral hygiene is imperative. You will need to brush the dentures on a daily basis to ensure that no food is allowed to accumulate. At night, you will likely want to take them out. You’ll need to place them in water or a special soaking solution because you can’t allow them to dry out.

It’s also important that you’re very careful with your dentures. They can break or chip easily if you drop them. If they do become damaged in some form, you will need to get your dentist to repair them.

Most people associate root canal therapy with lots of pain. However, if your dentist suggests that you need it, then you really need it. It will help get rid of dead pulp from the root canal of your tooth and help alleviate any pain that you were experiencing.

There are various symptoms that you may experience that indicate you may need this type of procedure. Swelling near the gums is a common sign. One of the most common however is recurring tooth pain. Pimples may also appear on the gums on a recurring basis.

Root canal therapy isn’t performed over the course of one visit. Instead, you will need to go back several times. During the initial visit, you will receive local anesthetic to allow drilling into the crown down into the pulp chamber. All diseased pulp is then removed from the chamber before it’s shaped into a form that can be filled more easily.

It’s possible that the tooth can be infected again before the next visit. To prevent this from happening, medication may be placed in the pulp chamber and it will then receive a temporary filling. You may also be prescribed antibiotics to prevent infections.

When you go back to the dentist, the tooth is opened back up to ensure that there is no decay left. If all has been removed, your root canal is filled with gutta-percha, a rubberlike substance, before being sealed on a permanent basis. The rubberlike substance helps prevent the tooth from becoming infected again.

After the root canal procedure has been done, you may be given a crown to place over the tooth. This will drastically improve its appearance so that it doesn’t have to be removed for aesthetic reasons. The crown can be made from various materials such as porcelain, gold, or metal alloy.

After undergoing root canal therapy, you will likely experience some discomfort for a few days. This will be caused by tissue inflammation that occurs naturally. You can get a bit of relief by purchasing an over-the-counter analgesic until the inflammation subsides.

You will need to go back to the dentist soon to ensure that the area has healed appropriately. You will also need to schedule regular visits. If you have had a root canal, then you will need to take proper care of your teeth to avoid having it done again.

At a minimum, you will need to brush twice a day as your dentist suggests. Flossing will also help get rid of food particles that brushing doesn’t remove. The tooth that you had the procedure done on shouldn’t be used to chew on harder foods for a while if you can help it.

Most people fear root canal therapy because of the pain involved. However, you won’t have many options. If you don’t have it done, then you will need to get the tooth extracted. The resulting space can prompt your remaining teeth to switch positions, developing into a bad bite.

Most people want the whitest smile that they can get. One of the quickest ways to get a nice smile is with teeth whitening. This procedure uses bleaching to restore your teeth to their natural color. It’s a particularly useful process if you have stained teeth.

There are various reasons why your teeth can become stained over time. Smokers typically have stained teeth since tobacco use over time will cause it. Consuming a lot of dark-colored foods or beverages can also cause the problem.

The results obtained from teeth whitening can vary in individual cases. The results often depend on how stained the teeth were to begin with. In order to avoid having unrealistic expectations, you should ask your dentist what to expect after the procedure has been completed. There are shade charts that you can look at so you can get a good idea of what to expect.

Before the dentist can begin whitening your teeth, he will need to put protective gauze around your gumline to protect it from the chemicals. After they are properly protected, he will apply concentrated peroxide gel on your teeth.

Some of these gels require exposure to a curing light or laser in order to work properly. The gel will remain on your teeth in 15 minute intervals. The maximum amount of time that it can be left on your teeth is an hour.

After this maximum time has elapsed, the dentist will rinse away the gel with water and fluoride. If your teeth are very stained, then you may have to come back for another session. Some patients report experiencing sensitivity after the process.

People with this problem with have increased sensitivity to pressure and touch. Heating particularly hot or cold items may also cause problems. If you have cracks in your teeth or a receding gumline, then you’ll have a higher risk of experiencing this sensitivity. Another possible side effect of this procedure is gum irritation which can last for several days.

After having your teeth whitened, you will need to practice good oral hygiene to keep the results. This means brushing your teeth after every meal and before going to bed. It’s also best that you avoid consuming dark-colored beverages and foods for a few days.

Some of these foods include juices, mustard, red wine, coffee, and tomato sauce. If you consume these foods within a days of the procedure, they may cause more staining since the pores in your enamel may not have had enough time to close.

You don’t always have to get your teeth whitened in the dentist’s office. There are professional kits that your dentist can provide you with. You will need to leave the peroxide gel on your teeth for a longer period of time since it will be a lower concentration.

These kits normally include bleaching trays that you put into your mouth. People often go to sleep with them in their mouths to let the gel do its work overnight. You can also buy over-the-counter kits for teeth whitening. However, they offer the lowest concentration of this gel, so you would need to leave them in for longer periods of time.
